Sunday Service November 30: Advent: Hope

Jesus, Hope for the nations

Today is the first Sunday of Advent, the four-week period leading up to Christmas. It is a time of expectation. The word “Advent” comes from the Latin adventus, which means “coming.” We remember the coming of Jesus into our world. His name is Immanuel: God is with us! And we look forward to His return. That is why we sing: O come, O come, Immanuel.

We will read Isaiah 11:1-10. Isaiah pronounces a prophecy here: words from God, spoken by a human being. He speaks these words at a dark moment in the history of Israel. He compares the royal house of David to a tree that has been cut down. Once an impressive giant of the forest, now nothing more than a stump. But there Isaiah sees something: a small green twig. Right there, on that ground of hopelessness. Very small, almost unnoted. But that little twig turns out to be God's salvation. God's salvation, not only for Israel, but for all nations.
